Oversight Committee on quota approves interim report
Tuesday, July 25 2006 10:44 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: The Oversight Committee, set up to prepare a roadmap for the implementation of 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in elite educational institutions from next year, today approved an interim report to be presented to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the next few days.

"We have placed the draft Interim Report before the Oversight Committee which approved it with some modifications," Chairman of the Committee Veerappa Moily told reporters after day-long deliberations.

The Committee has suggested setting up of an 'Empowerment Committee' in each of the institutes, where the new reservation for OBCs is to be implemented, so that they could come up with their requirements in faculty, infrastructure and finance to speed up the process, he said.

Moily's observation assumes significance in the light of the reported reservations expressed by IITs and IIMs to implement reservation in one go in view of paucity of faculty and infrastructure.

The former Karnataka Chief Minister said every sub-group of the Committee felt that it was possible to implement reservation from the academic year 2007-08.

Government had set up sub-groups on technological and engineering institutions, management institutions, Central universities, medical and agricultural institutes to provide inputs to the Committee to go ahead with its task.
