Security on high alert ahead of Kalam's J&K visit Thursday, July 27 2006 16:10 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Srinagar:
Security agencies have been put on a high alert ahead of visit of President A P J Abdul Kalamto Kashmir beginning tomorrow," officials said.
"Security has been tightened on all the routes through which the President is expected to pass during his visit to the valley," they said.
"Stung by criticism and hue and cry over the unprecedented security arrangements during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit in May, the security forces and other agencies were very keen to avoid a repeat of the situation during Kalam's visit," officials said.
"Although the security apparatus has been asked to remain vigilant all across the valley, only those areas of the city would have visible deployment of police and paramilitary
forces through which the President will pass," they said.
Security forces had turned entire Kashmir valley into a fortress with even pedestrian movement banned in the entire Srinagar city.
President Kalam is expected to address the legislative assembly and council of Jammu and Kashmir jointly and attend the diamond jubilee celebrations of state high court during his visit.
Officials said additional deployment of security forces has been carried out in the city while sanitisation and area domination exercises were conducted in the areas close to the
venues.
Dummy routes have also been created to keep the movement of the President secret during his visit.
