Wrong to blame particular community for terrorism: PM Tuesday, August 22 2006 12:24 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Seeking to allay apprehensions of the Muslim community, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday (Aug 21, 2006) said it was wrong to blame any particular community for terror acts and action against terrorists should be based on concrete evidence.
Addressing Muslim Ulemas and intellectuals from different parts of the country, Singh decried attempts to always point an accusing finger at the Muslim community whenever terror attacks took place.
"Terrorism should not be linked to Islam or any other religion, caste or creed", he said.
Muslim leaders complained that police and law enforcing agencies targetted innocent Muslims, bringing a sense of insecurity among the community members.
"This happens some time but it should not happen," the Prime Minister said.
Singh said he will convene a meeting of Chief Ministers to discuss all these issues.
"I understand your pain and sorrow," he told the Muslim delegation.
Describing terrorists as 'traitors and frauds, Singh said terrorism should be stamped out at any cost and sought the cooperation of Muslim leaders.
At the same time, he said, "Any action against terrorism should be based on concrete evidence and reality."
