Amid tight security, 11 people charged in the terror plot to blow up US-bound planes from the UK were yesterday (Aug 22, 2006) produced before a city magistrate and remanded to custody.
The first eight to appear before the judge at the City of Westminster magistrates court, all charged with conspiracy to commit murder and preparing acts of terrorism, were remanded to custody till September 4.
Three others charged with related terror offences were ordered held till August 29.
The 11 suspects arrived separately at the court in vans with blacked-out windows. They were taken from Paddington Green police station to the court via an unnamed holding area.
Their appearance in the court comes as the extraordinary scale of the suspected liquid bomb plot to blow up ten trans-atlantic jets and kill thousands of passengers was revealed.
The eight suspects charged with preparing acts of terrorism were identified as Ahmed Abdullah Ali, aka Abdullah Ali Ahmed Khan, 25; Tanvir Hussain, 25; Umar Islam (born Brian Young), 28; Arafat Waheed Khan, 25; Assad Ali Sarwar, 26; Adam Khatib, 19; Ibrahim Savant, 25; and Waheed Zaman, 22.
Detectives said they have recovered caches of bomb making equipment, lethal chemicals and martyrdom videos to substantiate the charge. Hundreds of computers and mobile telephones have also been seized along with hundreds of hours of surveillance footage and thousands of CDs, DVDs and electronic memory cards.
