Friday, August 25 2006 11:16 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Kolkata: Several junior doctors were injured when police lathicharged anti-quota agitationists who blocked the arterial Chittaranjan Avenue and Bowbazar street near Lalbazar, the Kolkata police headquarters.

After assembling at the state-run Medical College and Hospital the medicos went in a procession with placards protesting the Centre's decision to introduce reservation in government-aided educational institutions and set up a road block at the Chittaranjan Avenue.

"Police tried to persuade the protesters to disperse but when they did not pay heed resorted to a lathicharge," an eye-witness said.

''Many of our classmates were injured in the lathicharge'' a spokesman of the 'Youth for Equality'," spearheading the stir, said.

The police denied having made a lathicharge.
