China to re-measure lowest point in land territory Monday, August 28 2006 11:47 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Beijing:
China will re-measure the Aydingkol lake, the lowest point in the country's land territory and the second lowest point in the world, according to a news report.
Aydingkol lake is located at the centre of Turpan Depression in the northwestern region of Xinjiang. A measurement in 1978 had recorded its elevation as 155 meters below sea level.
Re-measurement this year will be more precise due to the advancement of science and technology in these 30 years, officials from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Surveying and Mapping Bureau said.
Re-measurement will be carried out in late autumn and winter because it is too hot for both surveyors and equipment in Turpan now, where temperature can be as high as 50 degrees centigrade in summer, China News Service reported.
Moreover, the swamps near the lake will be frozen in winter, which will make the re-measurement activity easier.
Currently, local officials are mapping the landform of the lake, in preparation for the re-measurement.
