PM convenes meeting of CM's to discuss various issues
Monday, September 4 2006 11:11 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: In an effort to finetune its strategy to counter terror and naxal threats, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has convened a meeting of Chief Ministers here tomorrow (Sept 5, 2006) when he will review the situation threadbare in the aftermath of the Mumbai serial blasts.

Tomorrow's meeting follows a review of the situation by the Prime Minister after the July 11 blasts during which he had admitted that the past responses to deal with terrorism and naxalism have been 'inadequate'.

The Prime Minister has described naxalism as the single biggest internal security challenge the country has ever faced and has already met Chief Ministers of affected states during which he suggested setting up of joint unified commands in areas badly hit by the menace.

He also suggested giving high priority to the two-pronged strategy of effective police response and socio-economic development of the affected regions.

Singh had observed that these threats have to be met firmly, with determination and with a will to destroy them.

With the Mumbai serial blasts weighing heavily on his mind, the Prime Minister in his Independence Day address had said that both terrorism and naxalism were twin threats to the country's security.

The Cabinet Committee on Security had on Saturday done a comprehensive review of the internal security situation in the country including left wing extremism, disaster management, police augumentation and communal violence.

The CCS also reviewed the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Northeast and naxal-affected states, officials said adding the intelligence gathering mechanism was also discussed as also steps required for strengthening it.
