BJP Nat'l Executive to review coalition experiment
Thursday, September 7 2006 11:20 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Dehradun: On the brink of losing power inJharkhand, the BJP, trying to rework the Hindutva card, is all set to conduct a review of its experience in coalition governments in other states, especially Karnataka, when it meets here from tomorrow for its national executive.

The three-day national executive, which was convened essentially to work its strategy for the upcoming assembly in four states of Hindi heartland, has been overshadowed by the developments in Jharkhand where the BJP-led Government is tottering.

The row over Vande Mataram has come in handy for the BJP whose Presidentship went to Rajnath Singh at the start of the year. Singh and his predecessor L K Advani will lead the singing of the entire Vande Mataram, which includes portions opposed seven decades ago by the Muslim League, before the start of the BJP's office-bearers meeting today (Sept 6, 2006) morning.

The crisis for its government in Jharkhand has set the alarm bells ringing for BJP which is running a coalition government with JD(U) in Bihar and with JD(S) in Karnataka, a senior party leader said.

"The BJP leaders will surely be conducting a review of its coalition governments, especially of Karnataka, where there are undercurrents of disharmony among the partners and within the party, during their meetings here," the leader, who wanted not to be named.

"The focus has to be in terms of us analysing where we stand in other states", the leader said.

The BJP has suspended one of its Karnataka MLCs, seen as close to a senior party leader from the state, for his allegations of corruption against Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy of JD(S).

"Ties between alliance partners have to be warm if a coalition were to stay in power. There should be no attempts from either side to destabilise the administration," the BJP leader said.

In Bihar too, he added, party MLAs want further expansion of the ministry, something that is not forthcoming immediately.

Over the past one year, several senior leaders like Uma Bharati, Madan Lal Khurana and Babu Lal Marandi have been shown the door after they registered their disaffection with the party top bosses.

"Such events sometime deliver dire warnings to workers especially when elections loom. We have got a lot of work to do," another BJP leader said.

"In an attempt to build bridges with the Sangh Parivar and re-establish itself as a party espousing the Hindutva cause, the BJP also aims at sending out a nationalist message ahead of the elections," a party leader said.

The Vande Mataram row has in fact given a common cause to BJP and RSS after the ties between them had come under strain over the past few years over ideological issues.
