Sri Lanka: 2 soldiers killed in fresh Jaffna violence Saturday, September 9 2006 11:07 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Colombo:
At least two Sri Lankan soldiers were killed and 15 wounded in fresh fighting with Tamil Tiger rebels in the northern peninsula of Jaffna today (Sept 9, 2006), military sources said.
The two soldiers were killed in the first wave of attacks mounted by troops against Tiger gun positions along the de facto border in the peninsula, the sources said. Fifteen soldiers were also injured.
The offensive, mounted from three positions, was aimed at pushing back Tiger guns that threatened military installations and civilians in Jaffna, they said.
The Sri Lankan Air Force had the day before carried out intense aerial bombardment against Tiger positions in the southern part of the peninsula.
