Second batch 1993 serial blasts case judgement

Mumbai: The designated TADA court hearing the 1993 serial blasts case is today slated to pronounce its verdict on the involvement of those charged with transporting and planting RDX-laden scooters and other vehicles that killed 257 and injured 713 others.

The first verdict will be delivered by judge P D Kode on Javeri Bazar blast involving accused Muhammed Kasam Ghansar who is charged with parking a RDX-laden scooter that exploded on March 12, 1993 at 3.05 pm killing 17 people and injuring 57 others. Property worth Rs 1.20 crore was damaged in this blast.

If found guilty Ghansar would face punishment ranging from five years to life imprisonment and even death, according to Special Public Prosecutor Ujjal Nikam.

Time permitting, the court will deliver the verdict on other accused who have been asked to be produced in the court today.

The court is also likely to hear arguments on the quantum of punishment to be awarded to the four members of Memon family who have been found guilty. They are Yakub Memon, Yusuf Memon, Essa Memon, all brothers of prime acused Tiger Memon -- and his sister-in law Rubina Memon.

Tight security has been put in place in and around the court located inside the central jail at Arthur Road.

Of the total 123 accused, those on bail including film actor Sanjay Dutt have been exempted from appearance untill further orders.
