Iran nuclear issues stand off should be resolved: PM Friday, September 15 2006 15:05 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Havana:
With the Iran nuclear issue listed as a major item in the NAM summit, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today (Sept 15, 2006) said any doubts on the stand off should
be resolved through dialogue and discussion rather than exercise of coercive action.
"I have not not seen the draft resolution. I have stated on a number of occasions that Iran is a signatory to the nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty. Therefore, Iran must have all the rights that go with being a member of the NPT and it must also fulfill all obligations," he told reporters accompanying him from Brasilia to Havana.
"And if there are doubts about Iran's nuclear programme those doubts should be resolved through dialogue, through discussion rather than exericse of coercive action,"
he said.
The Prime Minister was cautious about a meeting with President Mahmoud Ahmednijad of Iran.
Asked whether he would be meeting the Iranian President, he said they would all be in the same hall and he may come across him there.
