Rebels killed at least 16 people in Iraq in a series of bombings and shootings yesterday (Sept 20, 2006), security officials said.
A suicide bomber driving a truck attacked a police station near an oil refinery in the south Baghdad Sunni district of Al-Dura, killing three people and wounding 10.
Two children were killed and a woman wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in the Saediyah neighbourhood.
Another civilian was killed in a roadside bombing in east Baghdad as US patrol passed in the Baladiyat neighbourhood
Mortar fire wounded four civilians in the Al-Talbiyah neighbourhood in the city centre.
Northeast of the capital, seven people were killed in separate attacks in the restive, confessionally mixed province of Diyala.
Two Iraqi soldiers died when a roadside bomb exploded as their patrol passed in the town of Balad Ruz, while a policeman was shot dead in the provincial capital Baquba.
Gunmen also killed a former colonel in Saddam Hussein's disbanded military and a police officer in Baquba, while two civilians were killed and two security personnel wounded in other attacks in the city.
"In the central city of Diwaniyah, a civilian was killed and another wounded when two roadside bombs exploded against passing US patrols," police said.
Two more roadside bombings south of the capital, killed one civilian near the town of Mahawil and wounded 10 near Mahmudiyah.
