New Delhi: India and Pakistan resumed peace talks on yesterday (Nov 14, 2006), more than four months after they broke down. A clutch of issues, including terrorism, the establishment of an anti-terror mechanism, Kashmir, Siachen, and confidence-building measures were on the agenda. Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon and his Pakistani counterpart, Riaz Mohammed Khan, reviewed the progress of the dialogue. No details were made available. External affairs ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna did not say whether India had shared information on the Mumbai blasts and other terrorist attacks in the country. India had accused Pakistan of complicity in the 11/7 bombings and called off the scheduled foreign-secretary-level talks. New Delhi had been saying in the run-up to these talks that it would confront Islamabad with evidence when possible, and share information when appropriate. The talks appear to have gone well because Riaz Khan and his delegation met External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee later. Mukherjee said it was important for both countries to jointly fight terror. |
