Thursday, November 23, 2006 11:35 [IST]

Kathmandu: Nepal took a day off yesterday (Nov 22, 2006)to rejoice the heralding of peace after years of insurgency following the signing of the landmark accord under which the Maoists will join the political mainstream.

The international community and the media here welcomed the deal reached between Prime Minister G P Koirala and Maoist leader Prachanda saying this would usher the country into the path of lasting peace and democracy.

Under the deal, the rebels will join the transitional government and put their weapons under UN monitoring.

Schools, offices and business establishments remained shut today, after a public holiday was declared by the Government. Rallies in support of the peace treaty were held in the capital.

The US expressed the hope that the peace agreement would place Nepal on the path of lasting peace and democracy.

In London, British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said UK applauds the commitment of the people of Nepal to build a stable and peaceful future.

"We now look to both sides to make the agreement a reality throughout Nepal," she said.

The United Nations, which is overseeing the arms management of the rebels, said the accord was a 'key step forward in the peace process.'

Nepali newspapers dedicated banner headlines and front- page editorials to the peace treaty. Leading English daily The Kathmandu Post said the agreement heralded in a new dawn of peace, progress and prosperity.

The allround cheer also rubbed-off on the Nepalese people who hailed the treaty as an end to violence.
