Dhaka: With Bangladesh's controvesial poll chief M A Aziz forced out of office for three months by opposition street protests, the 14-party alliance campaigning for electoral reforms today suspended the crippling four-day transport blockade. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed, whose Awami League is spearheading the campaign for electoral reforms, announced suspension of the four-day commuication blockade but said she was not satisfied with the steps taken so far to ensure free and credible elections. "We are suspending the road, railway and waterway blockade considering we have achieved initial victory with justice K M Hasan bowing out from taking the charge of the caretaker government and Justice M A Aziz stepping aside for the elections," Sheikh Hasina told a crowded press conference at her party office here. "This is a victory for the people who aspire for democracy and to ensure their voting rights," she said. President Iajuddin Ahmed, who is also heading the interim government, today appointed former Justice Mahfuzur Rahman as the acting poll chief to replace Aziz who went on a 90-day leave yesterday, in the face of Opposition demand for his ouster to ensure free and fair election due early next year. The alliance also wants a scrutiny of the voters' list which has 14 million fake voters, Sheikh Hasina said, adding that number was put at 13 million by the international community. |
