Repeated adjournments in RS over Jaiswal's remarks
Monday, November 27, 2006 02:50 [IST]

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha today (Nov 27, 2006)witnessed repeated adjournments over reports of Centre's plans to impose President's rule in Uttar Pradesh as Samajwadi Party members clashed with treasury benches seeking a statement from Home Minister Shivraj Patil.

The issue, which saw two adjournments during Question Hour, was raked up again in Zero Hour, forcing Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan to adjourn the House till 1400 hours.

Raising the matter during Zero Hour, SP member Shahid Siddiqui demanded a clarification from the government on the reported statement by Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal regarding Mulayam Singh Yadav government.

Jaiswal, however, denied having made any statement that the Centre was considering imposition of President's rule.

Not satisfied with Jaiswal's clarification, slogan-shouting SP members trooped into the Well demanding that Patil should set the record straight.

SP members were seen clashing with Congress benches on the issue alleging the Centre was undermining an elected government in the state.

The Lok Sabha too witnessed heated exchanges between SP members and cine star-turned politican Raj Babbar who accused the Mulayam Singh Yadav government of "repression" of minorities and farmers.
