Tuesday, November 28, 2006 06:12 [IST]

Mumbai: Former customs official Somnath Thapa was Tuesday found guilty by a special court for conspiracy and smuggling of arms and ammunition in the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

Thapa, a former additional commissioner, had allowed the consignment of arms and RDX used for triggering the blasts to be smuggled into Mumbai by accused Tiger Memon and his aides.

Special Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) Judge P.D. Kode is expected Tuesday to pronounce his verdict on Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt's alleged complicity in the 1993 serial bombings that killed 257 people.

The 47-year-old Dutt faces charges of possessing an AK-56 rifle, ammunition and hand grenades, which were part of the smuggled arms consignment meant for the bombings.

So far, of the 123 accused, the special court has convicted 86 and acquitted 23 either for lack of evidence or due to benefit of doubt.
