Parliament approves Constitution (ST) Order Bil Tuesday, December 05, 2006 03:33 [IST]
New Delhi: Parliament yesterday (Dec 4, 2006) passed a
bill to modify the list of Scheduled Tribes in Bihar.
The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order Amendment Bill, 2006, was passed by
the Rajya Sabha earlier. The Lok Sabha gave its nod today.
The legislation seeks to rectify an error made in the Hindi version of
Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Act, 1976 in which the
word "Lohara" was mis-spelt.
The mistake had resulted in treating the "Lohar" community
(ironsmith), which fall under the category of Other Backward Classes, as
Scheduled Tribes.
"The Bill only seeks to correct the typographical error made in the Hindi
version of the 1976 Amendment Act," Tribal Affairs Minister P R Kyndiah
said.
The bill was passed by a voice vote.
