Senate leader assures Manmohan Singh on nuclear deal Wednesday, December 06, 2006 11:33 [IST]
Washington: US Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has assured
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that law makers are 'working on' India's concern
over certain aspects of the bills passed by the Congress to implement the civil
nuclear deal, and that the final legislation was on track for completion this
week.
Frist, in a telephone call initiated by him last morning expressed confidence
to Manmohan Singh that Congressional action on the legislation will be
completed this week.
"I spoke today by telephone with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
regarding the pending legislation to authorise civil nuclear cooperation
between the United States
and India.
I assured Prime Minister Singh that one of my top priorities for the remainder
of this Congress is to enact this legislation, and I told him I am confident
that we will be able to complete congressional action on it this week,"
Frist said in a statement to the media.
Prime Minister Singh stressed that there are a number of provisions in the
bills passed by the House and Senate that are problematic for the Indian
government because they depart from the understanding reached with President
Bush on this issue on July 18, 2005.
Frist said he assured Manmohan Singh that his concerns would be dealt with,
saying that he has named himself to be one of the negotiators on the bill in
order to be able to participate personally in the process of refining the
legislation. |
