BJP MP Navjot Sidhu case to come up in HC soon Wednesday, December 06, 2006 11:34 [IST]
Chandigarh: Punjab and Haryana High Court will yesterday
(Dec 5, 2006) hear arguments from the prosecution and the defence on the
quantum of sentence to be given to former BJP MP Navjot Sidhu and his friend
whose acquittal by a lower court in a road rage death case was set aside by it
last week.
A Division Bench comprising Justices Mehtab Singh Gill and Baldev Singh had on
December one set aside the order of Patiala sessions
judge and convicted Sidhu and his friend for causing the death of a Patiala resident, Gurnam
Singh, following a scuffle after a road accident 18 years ago.
The High Court had allowed the appeal of the Punjab
government and the complainant against the acquittal of Sidhu and his friend
Rupinder Singh Sandhu by the lower court in September 1999 and held them guilty
of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The bench had fixed December 6 as the date for arguments on the quantum of
sentence. Sidhu had resigned as Amritsar MP after the High Court verdict.
