BJP seeks clarifications from PM on nuclear deal Friday, December 08, 2006 11:44 [IST]
New Delhi:
With the deal for civil nuclear cooperation in its last stages, the main
Opposition BJP today sought clarifications from the government on the
'complexities' over the Indo-US agreement.
BJP leader Jaswant Singh also recalled that the US business lobby had welcomed
the pact as the opening up of Indian nuclear markets while Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh had referred to it as an energy agreement.
"Which of these aspects is the 'agreement' about? That is why the
government of India
must categorically state now what it is that is being negotiated; what
complexities are being encountered and why," he told reporters here.
His comments followed Republican Majority Leader in the US House of
Representatives John Boehner halting action towards reaching an "agreed
text" of the legisltation enabling passage of the India-US nuclear deal.
The Conferees of the House and the Senate have not filed a final report with
the Rules Committee prior to consideration of the House with Boehner appearing
to be interested in attaching legislation not related to the India bill.
Singh, who claimed the Indian embassy in Washington
has not officially been shown the "final agreed text" and that many
of the amendments that India
wanted eliminated have been retained, said the government must stay with the
Prime Minister's August 17 statement in Parliament on the pact.
"Those commitments, made in Parliament, were policy pronouncements, they
superceded the earlier July 18, 2005 and March 26, 2006
announcements/agreements. We want to know if those Parliamentary commitments
have now been abandoned?" he asked.
