Democrat lawmaker hails finalisation of Indo-US bill Friday, December 08, 2006 11:59 [IST]
Washington: The finalisation of a bill to
implement the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal has been hailed by an influential
Democrat lawmaker as an opportunity to achieve 'geo-strategic re-alignment of India with the US' which will leave its deep
imprints on bilateral relationship.
"This latest step in a long and sometimes arduous legislative process has
resulted in a satisfying consensus. It is in the interest of both the US and India to strengthen ties and to
nurture the nascent partnership between our two great countries," Ranking
Member of House International Committee and a manager of Conference Committee
Tom Lantos said.
"We now have the opportunity to achieve a geostrategic realignment of India with the United States. This will be of
immense importance to global security and economic development, while at the
same time furthering our interests in limiting the spread of nuclear
weapons," Lantos, the California Democrat who will be the next Chair of
the House International Relations Committee in the 110th Congress, said.
"The conference report agreement strikes the right balance between giving
the President the necessary flexibility to negotiate the best agreement possible
with New Delhi,
while at the same time preserving Congressional oversight. I fully expect this
will be a law of which all involved in its creation can be proud," he
added. |
