Awami League-led alliance to hold fresh protests Tuesday, December 12, 2006 11:39 [IST]
Dhaka: The 14-party alliance in Bangladesh led by former Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina today said it would hold nationwide demonstrations
tomorrow demanding electoral reforms ahead of next month's polls despite the
deployment of Army troops to maintain order.
Protesting against President Ijauddin Ahmed's last night's speech where he
criticised the alliance for persisting with its agitation "even after the
fulfillment of their demands", AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil likened
him to former Pakistan
ruler Yahya Khan.
"The speech seemed to be one delivered by (late Pakistani President
General) Yahya Khan as he tried to misguide the people based on lies,"
Jalil said.
Khan unleashed one of the worst genocides in history that cost three million
lives to suppress the 1971 indepenendence war for Bangladesh,
the former East Pakistan.
"We plan to hold peaceful protests across the country to press for reforms
that will make the upcoming polls free and fair," he said.
The announcement of renewed demonstrations despite the weekend deployment of
the military to end weeks of often-violent protests.
The caretaker government in Bangladesh
had yesterday ordered Army to be deployed in the run up to January elections.
The troops deployment has also irked some of Ahmed's advisors who have hinted
at quitting their jobs.
United States, Britain and Canada have said they hoped the
army would perfrom its duties in a non-partisan manner to create atmosphere for
free elections.
