Tuesday, December 19, 2006 01:17 [IST]

Hyderabad, Opposition members belonging to TDP, TRS, CPI(M) and BJP were today suspended from Andhra Pradesh Assembly for obstructing proceedings over the land issue involving Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

As soon as the house assembled for the day, the opposition members insisted on resuming the debate on surrender of surplus land by Chief Minister, an issue that rocked the Assembly for four days.

Waving placards and shouting slogns, the opposition members demanded resignation of Chief Minister for illegaly holding the assigned lands for nearly three decades.

Speaker K R Suresh Reddy disallowed the adjournment motion moved by the opposition parties. However, they continued to stall the proceedings, prompting the Chair to adjourn the house briefly.

The furore continued when the House reassembled as the opposition members again shouted slogans demanding Chief Minister's resignation.

Amidst the din, the Legislative Affairs Minister K Rosaiah moved a motion under rule 300 seeking suspension of the opposition members present in the House for the period of Question Hour.

After their suspension, marshals were called in to evict the members from the House.

Later, opposition members staged a sit-in in the Assembly lobby.
