Fair sex hogs limelight on last day of Parliament Tuesday, December 19, 2006 05:24 [IST]
New Delhi, The last day of the winter session in Rajya Sabha today turned out to be 'ladies special' with members of the fair sex making a common cause on the much-delayed women's reservation bill.
As soon as the Zero Hour began, Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan called Sushma Swaraj (BJP) to read out her notice on women's reservation.
Even before she could speak, uproar broke out with Congress women members shouting from their seats perhaps to ensure that the BJP member did not take credit for raising the matter.
In the din, women members from both Congress and BJP left their seats and rushed to the aisle. Brinda Karat (CPI-M), S G Indira (AIADMK) and N P Durga (TDP) rushed to the well in support of the bill and were seen having arguments with the Chair.
"Ladies should not behave like this," observed Khan. But as they showed no signs of relenting, the House was adjourned for 15 minutes.
When the House reassembled at 1230 hours, similar scenes prevailed.
In the prevailing noise, Swaraj rued that let alone passage, the much-delayed bill was not even tabled as promised by the Government as slogans "Mahilaon ke saath ananyay nahin chalega (injustice to women will not be tolerated)" were raised.
As the slogan-shouting continued, the House was again adjourned for 20 minutes.
When it met again, Dinesh Trivedi (Trinamool Congress) sought to raise the indefinite fast undertaken by his leader Mamata Banerjee and staged a walkout.
