Diplomats expect watered down UN resolution on Iran
Thursday, December 21, 2006 12:57 [IST]

United Nations: "The UN Security Council is expected to vote tomorrow on a somewhat watered-down draft resolution to impose limited sanctions on Iran for continuing its uranium enrichment programme," diplomats said.

To win support of Russians, who have close economic ties with Iran, the resolution drops mandatory travel ban on Tehran's top officials connected with its nuclear programme and only asks the states to 'exercise vigilance' and inform the Council if any one of the persons listed by it crosses their borders.

The resolution, drafted by Britain, France and Germany, will prohibit member States to provide materials and technology which could help Iranian uranium enrichment programme, development of heavy water reactors and reprocessing activities.

But it does not mention the light water reactor Russia is helping build Bushehr which will produce power. It also asks the States to freeze the assets of companies and individuals connected with the programme and identified by it.

Russia and China have not explicitly said that they would vote for resolution which was circulated to the Council members yesterday and American diplomats said Washington is studying the draft.

The United States was keen on travel ban which has been diluted considerably and does not now prohibit Iranian officials traveling abroad.

Reports from Moscow said the Russian officials consider new draft much improved than the original one but they still had reservation on two or three points.
