Kolkata: Army holds court of inquiry on jawans Monday, January 01, 2007 05:05 [IST]
Kolkata: The Army's Eastern Command today (Jan 1,2007)
started a court of inquiry into its personnel going on a rampage at the Park
Street police station here yesterday (Dec 31,2006) night and freeing two
officers arrested for alleged eve-teasing at a hotel.
"A court of inquiry has started today to look into the incident," a
Defence spokesman said.
In reply to a question, he said the Eastern Command had not been formally
informed about the incident by civilian authorities and came to know of it only
after a police official informed its officials over telephone.
"We still do not have anything in writing from the civilian
authorities," he said.
A platoon of army personnel belonging to the 3 Madras Regiment went on the
rampage inside the Park Street
police station after two of its officers were arrested on eve-teasing charges
during New Year celebrations at a hotel.
Police said that besides breaking furniture inside the police station, the
armymen beat up some policemen and forcibly took away the two arrested officers
from custody. Six persons arrested on charges of eve-teasing also escaped from
the police lock-up in the melee.
"The two army officers freed by their colleagues were now with their
regiment which arrived here three months ago from Siachen," the spokesman
said.
