New Year 2007 ushered in with gusto in the capital

New Delhi:Young men, women and children danced on the streets and honked their cars atmidnight to usher in 2007 amid drinking, merry-making and colourful fireworks.


Forgetting the winter chill and the fog, people thronged shopping malls,multiplexes, discotheques and other haunts in the national capital with themain draw being the brightly- illuminated Connaught Place where revellers blewpaper bugles to herald the New Year.

and parts of India Gatewere made out of bounds for traffic by the police since the evening.

Thousands of police and RAF personnel were deployed to ensure the celebrationsdid not go out of hand and a special watch was maintained to check drunkendriving and eve-teasing.

Teams armed with alcometers were deployed at various points, motorists werestopped for random checks and plainclothes police kept tabs on street romeos.

The warmer Mumbai seafront and other places in the city saw occasion celebratedwith gusto.

Marine Drive, the 'Queen's Necklace', Gateway of India and the beaches drewmaximum crowds while others chose to jubilate in star hotels, pubs and discos.

Celebrities like A R Rahman, Nelly Furtado, Himesh Reshamiya and MallikaSherawat performed at events to ring in the New Year in the city.

"A force of over 25,000 was on the field through the night, Mumbai DeputyCommissioner of Police (Operations)" said R N Tadvi.
