Thursday, January 04, 2007 12:32 [IST]

azizIslamabad: Amid a war of words between Pakistani and Afghanileaders on Islamabad's decision to mine and fence part of the porous borderbetween the two countries, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz would travel toAfghanistan today (Jan 4, 2007) for talks with President Hamid Karzai.

The Prime Minister is visiting in response to an invitation from Karzai and thetwo leaders would discuss a host of issues, Foreign Office spokesperson TasnimAslam told a media briefing here.

Aslam described the relations between Pakistanand Afghanistan as 'unique'but did not refer to mounting tensions between Islamabadand Kabul over persistent allegations fromAfghan leaders over the continued infiltrations by Taliban militants from Pakistan.

She said there were frequent interactions between the leaders of both thecountries. While Karzai visited Pakistannine times ever since he took over as President in 2002, President PervezMusharraf and Prime Ministers of Pakistan visited Kabul six times, she said.

"The frequent inter action is the hallmark of the relationship," shesaid.

The visit comes at a time when Kabul has strongly protested Pakistan's decisionto mine and fence parts of tits 2,400 km porous border.

Asked when Pakistan would beginwork to fence and mine the border, Aslam said Pakistan army has been asked towork out the modalities. Army will identify the problem areas where there ismovement (of Taliban) and difficult to control.

"Basically army has to identify sectors," she said adding theproposal was to mine and fence selective areas not the entire border.
