Guwahati: Noted Assamese author Indira Goswami, who has played a key role intalks with the ULFA, will write to the Prime Minister in an effort to break thedeadlock between the banned group and Centre over the stalled peace process in Assam.

"The ULFA has not asked me to write this letter but I will be writing atmy personnel level to the Prime Minister, whom I know since we were colleaguesin DelhiUniversity," Goswami told sources.

The peace process was derailed when the army resumed operations against theULFA on September 23 last year following a 40-day truce.

"I am very keen to break the stalemate. Otherwise both the ULFA and thearmy take up arms and there is bloodshed on both sides. What is thepurpose?" the Jnanpith awardee said.

"At my personnel level I will write a letter soon to the Prime Ministerthat all the core issues be discussed in future talks with the ULFA.

"Since sovereignty (as demanded by the ULFA) is a taboo word and the PrimeMinister has said he is the servant of the Constitution, discussion on all coreissues will include the demands of the ULFA," she said.

"I met Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi yesterday for some other matter when Itold him about my wanting to write the letter to the Prime Minister to breakthe stalemate." Asked if she would inform the ULFA about her decision,Goswami replied in the affirmation.

On the release of the five jailed leaders of ULFA's central committee asdemanded by the group, Goswami said, "I told the Chief Minister that as aguardian of the state he will have to take the first step."
