Government restores 73 police posts after talks Friday, January 05, 2007 12:32 [IST]
Kathmandu: The Nepal Government has restored 73 police
posts across the country, which were displaced during the decade-long Maoist
insurgency.
"Fifty-seven
police posts in six districts of west Nepal and 16 in Dhankuta district in the
east Nepal that were shifted to district headquarters have been restored,"
officials said.
The restoration of the displaced police posts came after the
Maoist chairman Prachanda directed party cadres to cooperate with the
government in restoring the police posts.
The Maoist leadership
agreed to restore the posts after the government said it would not be possible
to hold the constituent assembly elections without restoring the posts.
Home Minister Krishna
Sitoula has issued special instructions to security chiefs to restore all the
displaced police posts in Terai region by January 10.
He has also instructed the secretaries of the village
development commitees across the country to return to their offices before the
election process starts.
The Government has
said it was necessary to restore police posts and resume normal functioning of
VDCs so that voters' list collection and citizenship distribution works can be
conducted on time to prepare for the CA polls to be held by mid-June to rewrite
the constitution. |
