Mathew Hayden back in Aus one-day fold Friday, January 05, 2007 01:35 [IST]

Melbourne: Prolific opener Matthew Hayden was
today named in the Australian squad for the tri-series against England and New
Zealand, as well as the preliminary list for the World
Cup, boosting his chances of playing in the cricket extravaganza in the Caribbean starting in March.
The 35-year-old left-hander returned to the ODI side as a result of the
retirement of middle-order batsman Damien Martyn and the hamstring injury to
all-rounder Shane Watson.
Cricket Australia's National
Selection Panel today also included Victoria
captain Cameron White in the 13-player squad for the Commonwealth Bank Series
beginning next week and the preliminary list of 30 for the World Cup in the West Indies.
The list has to be pruned to 15 before the February 13 deadline.
The unavailability of Martyn and Watson had opened the door for other players,
Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said.
"There is no doubt we will miss Damien, he was a great player in both
forms of the game for Australia
over a long period of time and was instrumental in our ICC Champions Trophy
victory.
However, this provides Ricky (Ponting) with an opportunity if he chooses, to
elevate Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey in the batting order and to bring back
into the squad Matthew Hayden and Cameron White," Hilditch said.
"Hayden, who tallied more than 400 runs in the Australians' 5-0 Ashes rout
of England but did not figure in their maiden Champions Trophy triumph,
deserved the chance," he said.
