Centre to hold meeting on Assam security scenario Friday, January 12, 2007 11:16 [IST]
New Delhi: The Centre will
hold a high-level meeting here today (Jan 11, 2007) to review the security
scenario in violence-hit Assam
even as the army and paramilitary forces backed by helicopters continued their
major offensive against ULFA's bases in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The meeting, to be chaired by Union Home Secretary V K Duggal, will discuss
issues like deployment of available forces.
The Home Ministry has already rushed 3,000 additional para-military personnel
to Assam
after ULFA attacks against non-Assamese people left nearly 70 dead.
Sources in the MHA today said that the meeting will also review measures taken
for protection of residents of the State, steps taken to augment the strength
of security forces and the security arrangements for next month's National
Games, which the ULFA has threatened to disturb.
The meeting will be attended by Chief Secretary and DG Police of Assam,
Chairman, Railway Board, DG Military Operations and Directors General of RPF,
CRPF, BSF and CISF. A representative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and
Sports and Secretary General of the Indian Olympic Association will also be
present.
The MHA has asked the Assam Government to strengthen patrolling, set up more
pickets and beef up intelligence.
Sources said the Centre was also concerned over the issue of providing security
to workers engaged in the task of laying broad gauge line between Lumding and
Silchar.
