New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today (Jan 13,
2007) left for the resort island of Cebu in the Philippines on a three-day
visit to attend the India-ASEAN and East Asia summits expected to invigorate
India's economic and strategic relationship with the region.
Manmohan Singh will meet the 10 leaders of the Association
of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the 5th India-ASEAN summit Sunday and
will take part in the second East Asia Summit of 16 countries comprising ASEAN,
India, China, Japan,
South Korea, Australia and New Zealand Monday.
Intensification of economic relations, negotiations for a
Free Trade Area (FTA) agreement, and enhanced cooperation in areas of maritime
security and counter-terrorism will be key themes at the 5th India-ASEAN
summit.
A declaration on energy security that will focus on
cost-effective efficient utilisation of energy and exploration of alternate
sources of energy like bio-diesel will be issued at the end of the second East
Asia Summit.
