Five dead, 90 injured in Indonesian train accident Tuesday, January 16, 2007 03:04 [IST]
Jakarta: At least five people
were killed and over 90 injured when a passenger train derailed in Indonesia's Central Java province, railway officials said today (Jan 16,2007).
The accident occurred just before midnight Monday when the
west-bound train derailed in Banyumas district, about 350 km southeast of here,
said Nina, a railway official.
The Bengawan economy class train, left the Central Java city
of Solo and was bound for Jakarta's Tanah Abang railway station when
one of its 12 coaches fell into a six-metre deep river in Cilongok village,
reports said.
The train derailed at a sharp curve on a bridge while
crossing the river, according to the detik.com online news service.
The injured were admitted to hospitals in nearby Purwokerto
town.
A team from the National Transportation Safety Committee was
dispatched to the scene to determine the exact cause of the accident.
