'Tirade against Pakistan can hit war on terror' Tuesday, January 16, 2007 06:29 [IST]
Islamabad: Pakistan's
cooperation with the international community in the war against terror could
suffer on account of unfounded allegations made against his country, President
Pervez Musharraf has said.
Musharraf described as "baseless" allegation by US Maj. Gen. Benjamin Freakley that Taliban
commander Jalaluddin Haqqani was operating from Pakistan,
which has also come under attack from Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai.
The president stressed Monday that the "unprecedented
sacrifices" of his country in the war on terrorism cannot be ignored at
any cost, Online news agency reported.
Musharraf was addressing a high-level meeting to review the
situation on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and establishment of economic
opportunities with US
cooperation in tribal areas.
He explained that the main objective behind the decision to
fence and mine the border with Afghanistan
was to stop the movement of anti-state elements.
He added that Canada's recommendations of using
alternative means to control the border instead of fencing and mining would be
considered.
