Democrats not to block funding for troops to Iraq Friday, January 19, 2007 02:12 [IST]
New York; The US Congress, controlled by Democrats, will not
block funding for the additional American troops being sent to Iraq despite its
strong opposition, house speaker Nancy Pelosi has said.
The Democrats would not be held responsible for putting the soldiers in the
troop surge in additional harm's way, Pelosi told sources.
The interview came after group of Senators announced a bipartisan resolution
condemning the Bush administration's plan to induct more than 20,000 fresh
American troops in Iraq
to stem bloody sectarian conflict, which has taken thousand of lives. The
resolution is non-binding.
"Democrats will never cut off the funding for our troops when they are in
harm's way but it would be very difficult for the President to sustain a war of
this magnitude without support of American people and without support of the
Congress," Pelosi said.
"That's why Congress will vote to oppose the President's escalation from
the standpoint of policy. We will have our disagreement," Pelosi said,
according to the excerpt of the interview released yesterday. The interview is
yet to be telecast.
"The President, she said, knows that because the troops are in the harm's
way, the Congress would not cut off the resources. That's why he is moving so
quickly to put them in," she added.
