3G spectrum policy to be announced soon: Maran
Wednesday, January 24, 2007 03:44 [IST]

New Delhi: The Government is likely to announce 3G (third generation) spectrum policy by March this year.

"The policy will be ready by March 2007," Minister for IT and Communications Dayanidhi Maran said on the sidelines of Amcham Summit.

To a query on when the semiconductor policy would be finalised, Maran said, the Cabinet has given an 'in-principle' approval to the policy but the final recommendations would be announced after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's nod.

We have already lost out Intel due to the delay in announcing the fab policy, Maran said.

On the issue of lowering the roaming charges, he said, the reduction in roaming charges is essential and the companies should pass on the benefits to the end consumers.

Earlier in summit, he said the Small and Medium Enterprises can play an important role in the services sector.

"The contribution of services sector in the GDP has crossed over 50 per cent and will reach 70-80 per cent to the level of developed countries," Maran said.
