Deal for farmers in Cong poll manifesto for Punjab Monday, January 29, 2007 12:02 [IST]
New Delhi: Striving hard to retain power in Punjab for
coming assembly polls, the state's ruling Congress will be releasing its
manifesto in Chandigarh today (Jan 29, 2007) which is expected to promise a new
deal to farmers but steer clear of the controversial SEZ issue.
AICC General Secretary Janardan Divedi, in-charge of party affairs in Punjab, would be releasing the document in the presence
of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and PCC chief Shamsher Singh Dullo, party
sources said.
Congress had rode to power in the last polls by promising free power to farmers
but party sources said it was unlikely to chant the mantra again.
Instead, it would speak about launching a second green revolution and underline
the importance of Punjab in the ambitious
task.
The sources said plans are afoot to come out with a sleek document outlining
the promises made in the last polls, the achievements and the future
programmes.
Concerned over female foeticide and its adverse impact on gender disparity in
the state, the party is also expected to endeavour for discouraging the trend.
The manifesto is also expected to deal with problem of drug addiction among
youths.
Party chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would be star
campaigners for the party in Punjab as also in
Uttrakhand. |
