Emergency will not have any effect on media: Govt Tuesday, January 30, 2007 02:53 [IST]
Dhaka: Bangladesh's
caretaker government has clarified that the state of emergency imposed in the
country does not amount to any restrictions on the media.
"No restrictions have been imposed on the media's freedom or
functions," a handout of the home ministry said yesterday.
Moreover, the government will soon invite media representatives to discuss the
issue in order to reach a workable solution, it added.
"The government is deeply aware of the positive role the media has been
playing during the current critical period in the nation's history. It is also
concerned about the need to preserve the freedom of the press even under these
circumstances," he said.
The clarification
comes after an announcement on January 25 regarding emergency rules which hit
the media and activities of trade unions and professional bodies as well as
politics.
The caretaker government had proclaimed a state of emergency on January 12 amid
heightened political tension.
