Wednesday, January 31, 2007 11:03 [IST]

Indore: Stone-pelting at a Muharram procession set off communal tension in Karbala locality here yesterday (Jan 30, 2007) as police lobbed teargas shells and used batons to disperse members belonging to a minority community who gathered after the attack, police said.

The police action came after the members of the minority community gathered near the Karbala maidan where several persons belonging to the majority community offered prayers at a temple there amidst presence of heavy police force.

District authorities enforced prohibitory orders in Chhatripura, Pandhrinath and Raoji Bazar areas.

Both Collector Vivek Agrawal and Superintendent of Police Anshuman Singh Yadav were in Karbala to monitor the situation.

Agrawal said the situation is under control.
