Indore: Stone-pelting at a
Muharram procession set off communal tension in Karbala locality here yesterday (Jan 30,
2007) as police lobbed teargas shells and used batons to disperse members
belonging to a minority community who gathered after the attack, police said.
The police action came after the members of the minority community gathered
near the Karbala
maidan where several persons belonging to the majority community offered
prayers at a temple there amidst presence of heavy police force.
District authorities enforced prohibitory orders in Chhatripura, Pandhrinath
and Raoji Bazar areas.
Both Collector Vivek Agrawal and Superintendent of Police Anshuman Singh Yadav
were in Karbala
to monitor the situation.
Agrawal said the situation is under control.
