Centre to send additional paramilitary forces to Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur: The Centre will send additional paramilitary forces to restore peacein violence-hit Gorakhpur district, Union Minister of State for Home SriprakashJaiswal said today (Jan 1, 2007).

"The Centre will extend all possible help for the restoration of peacehere, including additional paramilitary forces," Jaiswal said during avisit here to assess the situation in the wake of violence following the arrestof a BJP MP.

Requesting all political parties to work for ushering in peace in the area, hesaid, "There is no time for politics. All political parties shouldunitedly work for peace and harmony." Jaiswal, who left for New Delhi in theafternoon, led a five-member delegation sent by the Centre to assess thesituation here.

Gorakhpurcontinued to be tense though officials said the situation was under control.

There has been no relaxation in curfew since Monday evening. Security forcesstaged a flag march in the curfew-bound areas again today.
