Jakarta: A 5.9-magnitudeearthquake struck the southern part of Indonesia'sJavaIsland early today (Feb 1, 2007), butthere were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The trembler occurred about 3:31 a.m. (2031 GMT Wednesday)and was centred in the Indian Ocean, 147 km southeast of Sukabumi district inWest Java, said Aprilyanto, an official at the Meteorology and GeophysicsAgency in Jakarta.
The quake struck at a depth of 59 km beneath the seabed, hesaid, and was felt along a wide stretch of the southern coast of West Java, but there were no reports of injuries ordamage.
