India, Libya set to boost bilateral cooperation

Dubai:Indiaand Libya discussed ways toboost their relationship, particularly in the IT and Oil sector during talksvisiting Petroleum Minister Murli Deora had with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafiin Tripoli.

During the meeting with the Indian minister in Sirte, outside Tripoli, Gaddafi stressed on the need formore frequent visits at the highest-level between the two countries, Indianofficials told sources.

Deora highlighted the growing business relations between the two countries indifferent sectors of the economy including construction, power, IT, oil andnatural gas.

The minister discussed the restructuring process going on inthe Indian Oil PSU's that would enhance its role in the Libyan oil sector.

He said the Indian PSUs have obtained exploration licences in six oil blocks -four as operators - and propose to participate as joint venture partners in therevamping of refineries, development of Libyan oil fields, gas projects andhelp in the capacity building of its energy personnel through state-of-the-arttraining facilities.

Petroleum Secretary M. S. Srinivasan, Indian Ambassador to Libya D. P.Srivastava, Chairman IndianOil S. Behuria, CMD Oil India M. R. Pasrija and MDONGC Videsh R. S. Butola were also present during the meeting.

Deora also delivered two letters one from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh andother from President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam to the Libyan leader.

"The Indian Prime Minister and President in their letters hailed the closerelations between the two countries and growing development of theserelations," the Libyan sources.

"They also expressed the desire and keen interest of India that their companies invest in Libya in various fields and contribute todevelopment projects which are continuing in Libya," it said.

Earlier, the Minister met Saif al-Islam, Chairman, Gaddafi Foundation and sonof the Libyan leader, where the issue of cross investment by both countries aswell as jointly in third countries were discussed.

The discussions also focused on imparting IT and computereducation to Libyan schoolchildren.

Deora suggested that Indiacould assist Libyaon the lines of computer education programme being implemented by Bharatiya VidyaBhavan.

Deora also raised the problems being faced by Indian businessmen in procuringLibyan visas. Libyan officials agreed to examine the issue and assured to sortout the difficulties.
