Cauvery verdict: TN wins over Karnataka

cauveryNew Delhi: A tribunal on today (Feb 5, 2007) ordered Karnataka will get 270 billion cubic feet of water and Tamil Nadu will receive 419 billion feet of water, in a ruling aimed at ending a century-old dispute over a shared river.

The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, based in New Delhi, gave the ruling.

Thousands of police were on guard in Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, to thwart possible violence arising from the verdict.

In 1991, an interim court order telling Karnataka to release 205 billion cubic feet of water from their shared Cauvery river sparked riots against minority Tamils in Bangalore, leaving more than 18 people dead.

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation has suspended all its inter-state bus services between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka as both the states are awaiting the Cauvery Tribunal's Final Award.

Sources said the decision to suspend the services was taken as a precautionary measure to avoid any untoward incident.

The services were suspended on routes, Salem-Banglore, Salem-Mysore, Erode-Banglore and Erode-Mysore.

Presently, the buses are plying till the Karnataka border, sources added.

"Meanwhile, security had been strengthened at the state border and at the Mettur Reservoir to avert any untoward incident," police said.
