Iran will be asked to keep commitment on LNG deal

pranabTehran: Amid India's keen interest to enhance energycooperation with Iran, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will askTehran to 'keep its commitment' with regard to the US$ 22 billion LiquefiedNatural Gas (LNG) deal signed two years ago when he meets the leadership heretoday(Feb 7, 2007).

Mukherjee, who arrived here today on a two-day visit, will meet PresidentMahmoud Ahmedinejad and hold talks with his counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki onentire gamut of bilateral relations and explore ways to expand cooperation.

The LNG deal, for supply of 5 million tonne of gas per year for 25 years, wassigned by the two counries in 2005 but the Iranian Parliament did not ratifyit.

"We will like to emphasise that the agreement should be finalised and wehope they will keep their commitment," he told journalists accompanyinghim here.

After the agreement was signed, Iranhad wanted to revise the price of the LNG to be supplied and negotiations havesince being going on.

Mukherjee pointed out that the LNG deal was an international agreement and Iran had'contractual obligation' to implement it.
