Dehradun: Braille EVM's for visually challenged

Dehradun: Blind people in the country might soon get achance to exercise their franchise through new Braille Electronic VotingMachines.

A proposal to this effect has already been accepted in principle by theElection Commission and the next step is to seek help from the NationalInstitute for Visually Handicapped (NIVH), the premier institute for blindshere, for making a Braille EVM.

Under the process, Braille symbols would be installed on the EVMs, thusvisually handicapped people should not have any problem in exercising theirfranchise, a NIVH spokesperson said.

"We received the proposal and it was immediately put before the ElectionCommission which in turn gave its acceptance in principle," UttarakhandChief Electoral Officer N Ravishanker said.

The Election Commission was working on the proposal though such machines areyet to come, Ravishanker said.

The proposal was first mooted by District Magistrate, Dehradun, Rakesh Kumar.
