Nandigram (WB):About fifty women farmers today gheraoed thelocal police station here, demanding among others, return of normalcy in thearea which has witnessed a series of violent incidents over acquisition of landfor an SEZ since last month.
Their other demands were restoration of ferry services, stopped by the stateadministration to carry out its land acquisition programme, investigation intoviolent incidents, withdrawal of 'false cases' and government action against'intimidation by CPI(M) cadres' to the peasants.
The women farmers also held a rally, attended by about 3,000 people, near thepolice station and pressed their demands. The women belonged to the 'BhumiUchhed Pratirodh Committee', a body of peasants fighting against landacquisition at Nandigram in East Midnaporedistrict.
The speakers alleged that the car of a team of women intellectuals, who werecoming from outside to participate in the rally, had been intercepted by CPI(M)cadres near Nandigram.
Police, however, said they had received no such complaint.
