Nandigram issue: RS adjourns; to meet on Apr 26

New Delhi:The first phase of the Budget session of Parliament, marred by a week-long impasse over the Nandigram police firing and the Quattrocchi issue earlier, ended today amidst uproar.

Parliament will now meet on April 26.

The last day of the first leg of the current session in the Rajya Sabha was no different from the preceding days when an unrelenting BJP-led opposition stalled the proceedings of the House by storming the well and shouting slogans against the Left Front government in West Bengal.

Lok Sabha, which had adjourned yesterday for the recess, a day ahead of the schedule, had witnessed similar protests.

While the Nandigram issue dominated last one week, the demand for extradition of Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, an accused in the Bofors case, derailed parliamentary proceedings when the Union Budget for 2007-08 and the Railway Budget were introduced.

As a result, vote-on-accounts for both the budgets and some bills were passed amidst uproar.

When the Upper House met for the day at 1100 hours, the Question Hour was stalled with opposition members protesting against the March 14 police firing in Nandigram which claimed 14 lives. Amid the uproar, Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat adjourned the Rajya Sabha till noon within minutes.

When some BJP members tried to move to the well of the House, Shekhawat said "don't come to the well or you will regret".

Though it was an action replay at noon, some papers were laid and a bill on National Institute of Technology was passed without any discussion amidst the din before the House was adjourned for the break.
