Bar Association to boycott judge
Tuesday, July 24, 2007 13:50 [IST]

Chandigarh: Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association today decided to boycott Justice Uma Nath Singh for his alleged "anti-judicial" activities in the wake of his order directing admission of a lawyer in a mental hospital, which was stayed by a division bench last night. A decision to this effect was taken by the association under the presidentship of Anmol Rattan Sidhu.

Sidhu told reporters that they will request the Chief Justice Vijender Jain not to allot any court work to Justice Singh and impeachment proceedings may be started against him. The lawyers had surrounded the judge's room in the court today and were not allowing anyone to enter it.

In a late last night sitting, a Division Bench granted a stay on the order of Justice Singh that CBI admit advocate Tahar Singh in a mental hospital in Agra after arresting him on complaint from his wife of torture. Lawyers complained that Justice Singh has passed the order against the lawyer because he had initiated signature campaign, seeking a discussion on conduct of judges.
